Round-up
League leaders St Blazey retain top spot despite losing a second league outing in a week. Following Saturdays reversal at Buckland they travelled to Penzance tonight but it was the hosts that won with a 2-0 victory. Geren James and Sam Cooper were both on target for the Magpies who climb a place to 7th in the table. Torpoint Athletic moved up two places to 4th and level on points with the leaders after winning 1-0 away at Dartmouth with Chris Yeatman scoring the all important goal. Wadebridge Town also won away from home, in their case 2-1 at Falmouth Town which ended a recent good run of league results from the Bickland Park hosts. Danny O'Hagan gave Falmouth the lead but 2 goals from Glen Squires handed the visitors the victory.
With so many sides in Throgmorton Cup action there were just two league matches today but that didn't stop the league leaders being in action as St Blazey travelled to Buckland Athletic. The Homers Heath hosts won 3-1 to inflict just the 2nd league defeat of the season on the Green & Blacks who do still however retain pole position. Bovey Tracey won their first match in Cornwall as they edged a 3-2 win away at Liskeard Athletic and that was enough for them to climb 2 places to 12th in the table.
BODMIN TOWN
League Position 2nd
Points 25
Bodmin Town are currently in second place in the league table and after having a small blip in their league games, three games without a win they got back to winning ways last Saturday when they entertained Holsworthy at Priory Park and ran out easy winners 5-2, bouncing back from that 5-0 defeat here the week before. Bodmin took an early lead after just four minutes when Tom Chambers headed home and the followed that up with number two in the 18th minute, when Mark Berry’s shot was blocked by Holsworthy keeper Chris Wearing but Nick Campbell scored from the rebound. The away side then reduced the arrears but Bodmin increased their lead in the 30th minute when Karl Turners cross field ball found Luke Hodge scoring with a fantastic diving header. But Holsworthy came back once more, and it took Bodmin until the 68th minute to net their fourth with Huw Morgan's great strike from 25 yards. The scoring was completed three minutes from the end of the game when Luke Hodge and Ben Smallridge combined well for Smallridge to find the net. So far this season Bodmin have played eight of their eleven league games at home where they are unbeaten, having dropped just two points in those games (in that 2-2 draw with Buckland), and they have currently won their last two at home. Away from home they have lost their last two consecutive games. Top league scorer so far this season is Mark Berry with six and he is closely followed by the young Chris Luxton their capture from Newquay who has five goals. They have recently lost their new signing in the close season Colin Marshall who has joined Southern league Premier Division side Tiverton Town. I still feel that they will be still fighting to retain the title they have won for the last two seasons. They will have started their defence of the Throgmorton Cup last Thursday when they played a rejuvenated Falmouth Town, and that leaves them without a league fixture today.
BOVEY TRACEY
League Position 14th
Points 12
Bovey Tracey are in 14th place in the league table. And last weekend they suffered their heaviest defeat in their first season in the Premier Division when they went down 6-1 away at table toppers and our opponents today St Blazey. Bovey fell 2-0 down but did then pull one back, in the 23rd minute when Mark Sneap shot home. But that is all they had to show for their trip to Cornwall as Blazey were in rampant mood, going in at half time Bovey were 3-1 down and Blazey added another three in the second half. Another down side to this defeat was that they had Lee Chapman sent off in this game. Bovey have taken just four points in their last six league games. Away from home they are without a win in their last four matches and they have lost their last two. Their top scorer in the league is Lee Pascoe with five and he is closely followed by M Mark Sneap with four. Having already been knocked out of the Throgmorton Cup, Bovey are in league action today when they travel into Cornwall once more and play Liskeard Athletic who are just one place below Bovey in 15th but Bovey have two more points than Liskeard, so a win for the Moorlanders would put someday light between those two teams.
CLYST ROVERS
League Position 20th
Points 5
A big well done to Clyst Rover who secured their first league win of the season on Saturday, when they beat high flying Torpoint Athletic 2-1 at home, on the day that their new manager Bobby Oaten took charge of his first game of the season. That stopped a run of ten games without a win and they only picked up two draws in those games. Torpoint travelled to Exeter as one of three clubs on 22 points at the top of the table and Clyst fell behind in the 18th minute. Scott Baxter was unlucky not equalise when his header from ten yards came back off the upright but they were level after 30 minutes when James McMartin a recent signing from Cullompton Rangers picked the ball up on the edge of the area and fired low past Torpoints keeper Martin Piper from 18 yards. Clyst continued to create the better chances but they had to wait until the 80th minute to secure the win when boss Oaten brought on Chris Eveleigh and he had a immediate impact by volleying the past Piper from 20 yards with his first touch in the game. "The players did exactly what we set out to do and I'm delighted with the start," said new boss Bobby Oaten. " There were a lot of good performances within the team and the players stuck to their roles very well. "We created a situation where everyone knew what their job was and the players responded to that brilliantly." Their biggest problem this season has been scoring goal as they have only net the back of the net eight times in league matches with their top league scorer being Chris Eveleigh with three goals. They have recently signed both Gareth Davies and James McMartin from local rivals Cullompton Rangers and they have also signed Lloyd Gardner again this time from Teignmouth and that was in time to play against Torpoint where he got star man in the Independent on Sunday.
CULLOMPTON RANGERS
League Position 11th
Points 17
Cullompton Rangers are currently in 11th place in the league table and it was after the Lord Mayor Show in Saturday as the previous Tuesday night they had beaten Saltash United 2-0 at Speeds Meadow to inflict their first league defeat of the season on the Cornishmen but on Saturday that good work was undone when they crashed to a 5-0 home defeat against Launceston who at the time were second from bottom of the table. Rangers were never really in this game at the weekend and have now lost five league games already this season. They have currently picked up just six points in their last six games, losing four of those games. They have lost their last two consecutive games away from Speeds Meadow, with Nick Murrey leading the league scorer stakes at the club with seven. Last night Cullompton would have played their 2nd round Throgmorton Cup tie at home to Division One East Crediton United.
DARTMOUTH
League Position 19th
Points 7
Dartmouth are now second from bottom of the Premier Division with just seven points from their ten league games. They fell to their seventh defeat on Saturday at home 3-1 against high flying Tavistock. They matched their opponents for most of the first half that remained goalless. They soon went 2-0 down in the second half but then they did pull one back when Luke Brown produced a sharp turn on the edge of the box before rifling as shot into the back of the Tavvy net. But hopes of a comeback for the home side were dashed when Tavvy scored their third five minutes from the end. They have now lost their last five consecutive league games, and both home and away they have lost their last three consecutive games It looks like this season will be a struggle for Dartmouth, let’s hope that they can stay out of the relegation battle. Today they travel to Launceston for a 2nd round tie in the Throgmorton Cup, another difficult game as in Launceston have won their last two games and hauled themselves up to 17th in the table.
ELBURTON VILLA
League Position 5th
Points 23
Elburton Villa drew 3-3 at home with lowly Liskeard Athletic and this now has them on 23 points from 16 games played, the most games that any side has played in the Premier Division, six more than ourselves Buckland. Villa were two goals down within the first twenty minutes but they hit back almost immediately when Sam Hughes met a through ball from Matt Strickland to draw the keeper and slot home,. That same man Hughes then scored the equaliser after being set up by Kevin Yetton he shot home from six yards. However, the visitors went back in front early in the second half and Hughes who had already hit the post and the crossbar finally got the equaliser in the 71st minute to complete his hat-trick (that being his second hat-trick this season). They have now not won in their last three league games and away from home they have lost their last two consecutive games. Sam Hughes has scored 14 league goals already for Vila this season. Villa are without a game this weekend.
FALMOUTH TOWN
League Position 12th
Points 14
Falmouth have started to turn their season around and are up to 12th in the table with 14 points from 9 league games. On Saturday they travelled to one of the title favourites Saltash United and ran out easy winners 3-0 on the day. Falmouth had Tom Smith and Sean Flynn commanding at the heart of their defence while Danny O’Hagan was a constant threat up front. Falmouth took a first half lead with O’Hagan’s cool finish and that lead was doubled in the 64th minute when Sean Flynn scored with a superb near post header. The points were wrapped up in the final minutes of the game when Liam Eddy’s pass sent in Matt Drummond to fire across the keeper inside the far post. Falmouth are now unbeaten in their last five games and have won their last three consecutive games, this run coming after they only picked up three points from their opening four league games. They have only played three games at home so far this season but they have a 100% record with three wins. They would have played their 2nd Round Throgmorton Cup tie against Bodmin Town at home and what a cracker that game could have been, on Thursday evening.
HOLSWORTHY
League Position 16th
Points 9
Holsworthy felt the wrath of Bodmin Town on Saturday when they travelled to Priory Park and were soundly beaten 5-2, a back lash of the three previous results that Bodmin had had. Bodmin built up a two goal lead but Holsworthy pulled one back when Ty Lavis’s shot was pushed out by Kevin Miller for Lee Morgan to slot home the loose ball. Bodmin went 3-1 up before Holsworthy pulled another back, there was a mix up between the Bodmin defence and keeper Miller and that let in Levi Landricombe to head into an empty net, however Bodmin hadn’t finished and added two further goals. Holsworthy are now in 16th place in the table with 9 points from 12 games and again it seems that they will be involved in the relegation dog fight this season. They haven’t won in their last four games, and have lost their last two consecutive games. Both home and away they haven't won in their last two games. Levi Landricombe is their current top league scorer with ten goals. Today they are in Throgmorton Cup action when they entertain Division One East side Teignmouth looking to secure a berth in the 3rd round.
IVYBRIDGE TOWN
League Position 4th
Points 24
Ivybridge are currently 3rd in the table and they picked up three good points at the weekend beating us Buckland 3-2 at Erme Valley. Ivybridge took a 10th minute lead when Ben Anniss turned and shot low past Neil Montandon in the Buck’s goal. Buck’s equalised just before half time then just seconds later the Ivy’s Ben Anniss suffered a badly broken leg and the game was held up for an hour while he received treatment and was taken to hospital. Bucks took the lead early in the second half but within minutes the Ivy’s were level through Andy Widdecombe’s 25 yard shot that took a deflection on its way into the net. Bucks then had John Rimmer sent off for a late challenge on Ivy’s keeper Terry Pelley who had to leave the field. Ivy’s got the winner 20 minutes from time when a mix up in the Bucks defence let Ryan McClements claim all three points for Ivybridge. This was Ivybridge’s first win in four games, however they have only lost twice at Erme Valley this season in nine league games. Today they entertain Torpoint Athletic in the 2nd round of the Throgmorton Cup and with their home form you wouldn’t bet against them making the 3rd round.
LAUNCESTON
League Position 17th
Points 8
After starting the season without a win in their first eight games and having lost the last five in a row, Launceston have now won two consecutive games to lift out of the bottom two and into 17th place in the table. On Saturday they travelled to Speeds Meadow to take on Cullompton Rangers who had beaten Saltash in the week 2-0, but the Clarets ran rout to record a 5-0 win to add to their 4-1 home win over bottom side Clyst Rovers. On Saturday they took the lead in the 20th minute through Charlie Blair and that lead was doubled in the 65th minute when Sam Davey fired home from 10 yards. And the pacey striker was on target again 10 minutes later to make it 3-0. Davey then completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute when he converted a penalty after he was hauled down in the Cully area. Their fifth goal came five minutes from the end of the game, when John James found the back of the Cully net. That win at Cully stopped a run of five games without a win. Sam Davey is their league top scorer with eight goals. Today they have a home tie in the Throgmorton Cup 2nd Round against Struggling Dartmouth.
LISKEARD ATHLETIC
League Position 15th
Points 10
Liskeard are in 15th place and they drew 3-3 away at Elburton Villa leaving them on 10 points from those games. Liskeard were 2-0 up within the first twenty minutes, Matt Godfree’s right footed shot and then when Villa’s defender Jamie Ahearn lost possession to Hussian Watfa whose shot flew past Villa keeper Simon May. Villa pulled it back to 2-2 but Liskeard regained the lead a minute into the second half when Watfa was first to react to a loose ball in the Villa penalty area. However, Villa pulled back level again to leave Liskeard with just one point. Liskeard have now not won in their last three games, and interestingly they have yet to record a home win this season, picking up just one point from their five games, and they have lost their last two. Liskeard are in league action today, when they take on league new boys Bovey Tracey at home, and with Bovey being just one place above them and two points if Liskeard could get the three points then they would move above Bovey in the league table.
PENZANCE
League Position 7th
Points 19
Penzance sit in 7th place in the table and they fell to their fourth league defeat this season when they went down 3-1 away at Witheridge on Saturday. Penzance went two goals down in this game but did pull the score back to 2-1 when seven minutes from the end of the game, Jamie Devine played a ball though that found Ross Pope who ran on to slot the ball past Withy keeper Chris Wright. But Witheridge went on to score a third and make the game safe. They have now lost their last two consecutive games, and have lost three in their last four games. At home they have lost just once this season but away from home they started with three consecutive wins but have since lost their last three consecutive games. Three players have scored five league goals this season they are Sam Cooper, John Lublam and Mark Vecessi. They would have been in Throgmorton Cup 2nd Round already when they would have played at St Blazey.
PLYMOUTH PARKWAY
League Position 10th
Points 17
Plymouth Parkway are in 10th place at the present time and do have games in hand on a few of the teams above them to climb higher. On Saturday they picked up their fifth league win narrowly beating Wadebridge Town at Bolitho Park 1-0. Parkway started the game brightly with efforts from Andy Sargent and Matt Cusack going close and but for an outstanding display by the Wades goalkeeper Mark Gears could have won the game in the first half. Parkway got the winning goal in the second half, when Andy Sargent converted Neil Kinsman’s cross. Gears then produced another couple of fine saves from Matt Cusack and Gavin Crockman, and then the visitors were reduced to 10 men late on and Parkway eased through to the final whistle. Parkway are now unbeaten in their last three league games, and have won their last two consecutive games, they have lost just once away from home in five games. Today Parkway have a tricky trip to Division One East high flyers Galmpton Gents in the Throgmorton Cup.
SALTASH UNITED
League Position 13th
Points 13
After a fine start to the season when they won their first three games and were unbeaten in their first five league games, they have since lost the last two. On Saturday they entertained Falmouth Town at the Kimberley Stadium and were well beaten 3-0. They weren’t really in the game in the first half and they improved just slightly at the beginning of the second but to no avail. So they sit in 13th place in the table with 13 points from 7 games, but will have top stop the rot quickly if they are to climb into the top half. Today they take on Division One West side Godolphin Atlantic in the Throgmorton Cup at the Kimberley Stadium.
TAVISTOCK
League Position 3rd
Points 25
Tavistock are in a rich vein of form at the moment and are now unbeaten in their last six league games, winning the last two. Last Saturday they travelled to struggling Dartmouth and ran out easy winners 3-1.The first half of this game remained goalless, but they took the lead early In the second courtesy of Adam Carter’s 18 yard drive. They doubled it in 70th minute through Shane Krac. Dart's pulled a goal back soon afterwards but Tavvy completed the scoring when Krac got his second of the afternoon. So along with St Blazey they are the form side ‘s in the division at the present time. They did play on Wednesday evening in the league, taking on Witheridge at home and on Saturday they travel to Division One West side Vospers Oak Villa in the Throgmorton Cup. At home they have wonall three league games they have played while away from home the lost their first three games but are now unbeaten in their last five games, winning the last two. Adam Carter with six league goals heads their scoring charts while Glyn Hobbs has five goals in the league campaign.
TORPOINT ATHLETIC
League Position 6th
Points 22
Torpoint’s six game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end at the hands of winless Clyst Rovers when Torpoint were beaten 2-1 away from home. They did take the lead in this game in the 22nd minute when Kevin Robinsons superb header flew past the home goalkeeper Chris Bashford and into the top corner. But that was all and Clyst fought back to record that first victory. Torpoint are in 6th place with 22 points from 14 league games. Today they have a very hard 2nd Round Throgmorton Cup tie away at Ivybridge Town who have lost just twice this season at Erme Valley.
WADEBRIDGE TOWN
League Position 18th
Points 8
Wadebridge Town fell to their eighth league defeat of the season when they went down 1-0 away Plymouth Parkway and that could have been an even greater score but for their goalkeeper Mark Gears who had a superb game, and they also had Simon Poole sent off 10 minutes from the end of the game. Away from home they are on a run of five games without a win. Today they take that bad away form to Division One West’s 2nd placed side Camelford in the Throgmorton Cup 2nd Round.
WITHERIDGE
League Position 9th
Points 18
Witheridge are in ninth place in the league table with 18 points from 12 games and last Saturday they picked up all three points from a 3-1 home win over league new boys Penzance. They took the lead in the sixth minute through David Hood and in the 27th minute he made it 2-0 when he deflected Richard Lamacrafts long range shot past a stranded keeper. They sealed the win in the 89th minute when Sam Williams played a one-two with Hood before finding the net. Witheridge are now unbeaten in their last three league games, and are unbeaten in all five of their league games at Edge Down Park this season. Today they travel to Division One East Royal Marines in the 2nd Round of this season Throgmorton Cup.
